Specialized Knowledge is on my virtue’s ledger for this week.

The meaning of Specialized Knowledge:

Specialized is explained as

  1. Requiring or having detailed training or expertise in a particular field.
  2. Presenting detailed information used in a particular field.
  3. Designed for a specific purpose or use.

Knowledge is explained as

  1. The state or fact of knowing.
  2. Familiarity, awareness, or understanding gained through experience or study.
  3. The sum or range of what has been perceived, discovered, or learned.

It’s interesting that both words are very similar to each other.

The wonderment of those who I have come upon this week where specialized knowledge can be applied, is in the several hundreds of thousands.  On my way to work, each driver and passenger, road crew worker, tow truck/roadside help worker, police/ambulance/fire, etc. have their own specialized knowledge in the work that they do, as do with their hobbies and interests.  The same for those working and visiting at each store, restaurant, practice, medical facility, etc. that I pass by and go into.  Walking my dogs, my neighbors have specialized knowledge.  At my networking meetings, each colleague has their own specialized knowledge in their careers, hobbies, and the like.

As for myself, my special knowledge starts to add up as I think about my experiences over the years.  Yes, my friends, you are going to be learning more about me and my specialized knowledge.  Let’s start with work- I’ve held many positions and j.o.b.s. in my 59 years, to spare you, I’ll just name a few.  I worked at cutting lawns, being a service clerk in a supermarket, worked in a liquor store, have 20 years as an ophthalmic assistant/technician, and working as a vendor at supermarkets as a merchandiser and resetter.  My passions (not to be confused with a j.o.b.) include Energy Healing and related holistic modalities, coaching, and dancing (as a competitor and official).  My hobbies and interests include dance, travelling, wine tasting, personal and professional development, reading, spending time with family and friends (this is where the specialized knowledge of knowing when to shut up and just observe comes in handy).  Each of these, I have specialized knowledge in that many of you and the general public don’t have.  Vice versa with you and your number of specialized knowledge categories, I don’t have a clue.  If everyone had the knowledge of everything, it wouldn’t be special, now would it?

Think about all of the years of experiences that you have in your work/career and hobbies/interests, etc.- what types of specialized knowledge do you have?  What are some of them?  I’d love to know.  How about your day to day goings on- imagine or become aware (be intentional) of all of the specialized knowledge that is taking place out there.  How grateful can we be for others’ specialized knowledge?

Next week, you’ll learn about my 9th Franklin Makeover Virtue…
